Humans spend most of their waking hours at work, commuting to/from work, working from home, talking about work, seeking work, or being unemployed. Work defines the health, safety, and wellbeing of all people, particularly those who are socioeconomically disadvantaged, underprivileged, and/or more vulnerable. The organization, type, hours, conditions, remuneration, benefits, protections, and policies of work—embedded in and influenced by diverse public and private sector policies—play a critical role in our lives.

bigstock Work Safety Word Cloud In Shap 414659183

Prolepsis conducts empirical population health research, with an emphasis on work, worklessness, working life, and their effects on the overall wellbeing of people. We challenge contemporary orthodoxies that suggest that ill health is mainly attributable to lifestyles, and believe instead that “…work—or lack of it—is central to our health and wellbeing, and is the underlying determinant of health inequalities” (Bambra 2011).  In a fast-evolving world of work, this view is further corroborated by renewed emphasis on the vital role of work as a key determinant of population wellbeing by national and international organizations that influence public policy.

Prolepsis has research programs that focus on the health and safety needs of socioeconomically disadvantaged, underserved, immigrant, refugee, minority, and displaced populations, as well as essential workers who are at risk, anywhere in the world.

More specifically, our current research delves into the following areas:

bigstock Agenda 422564195

  • General population and occupational health and safety, with an emphasis on prevention among socioeconomically disadvantaged populations.
  • Health and safety of transportation sector workers, such as truck and bus drivers, train conductors, seafarers, taxi/Uber/Lyft and delivery drivers, and aircraft pilots and crews.
  • Health and safety of immigrants and/or minorities concentrated in low-pay/high-risk jobs, such as agriculture, landscaping, poultry/meatpacking, roofing, and construction.
  • Health and safety of workers in critical infrastructure and/or high-risk sectors, such as healthcare, emergency, defense, energy, and ship building and repair.
  • Health and safety of workers in service-sector jobs, such as hotels, foodservice (preparation/service), laundry/dry-cleaning, and nail salons.
  • Role of public policies (e.g., social, economic, health, labor) in overall population wellbeing.

Because of the ubiquitous complexity of population health and safety processes, mechanisms, pathways, and outcomes, on the one hand, and overall inconsequential current interventions, on the other, our research programs are firmly grounded in:

bigstock 454613335

  • Holistic theoretical and conceptual perspectives, including syndemics, ecosocial, exposome, social determinants, political economy, and other macrosocial, systems, networks, and complexity frameworks, and
  • Novel epistemological, methodological, and analytical frameworks that are grounded in complex systems, network, and exposome sciences, including a complementary combination of data sciences, machine learning, simulation modeling, mathematical modeling, and statistical physics, among other innovations.

Prolepsis’ research projects are supported by grants and contracts from local, state, federal, and international governmental and nongovernmental agencies; nonprofit organizations; foundations; scientific and professional associations; advocacy groups; and the private sector.

Our active funded research projects are as follows:

projects

Hotel Workplace Violence Prevention
Funding agency: OSHA Susan Harwood Training Grants
Project duration: 9/2023-9/2024
Summary: This project develops new Workplace Violence Training Materials for hotel housekeepers and supervisors in the hospitality industry who are predominantly women, minorities, and immigrants. The training program covers topics such as understanding workplace violence, early indicators, prevention strategies, response protocols, relevant laws, and supervisor training skills. The training materials are provided in both English and Spanish.

Delineating Hispanic Immigrant Lodging and Foodservice Workers’ Allostatic Load Syndemic Disparities
Funding agency: National Institutes of Health
Project duration: 2018-2023
Summary: Low-wage Hispanic immigrant hotel and restaurant workers live and work in environments that generate disproportionate health risks. This project uses system dynamics methodologies to understand which factors influence their disease risks over time and which interventions can reduce health disparities. The successful completion of the study has potential to shed new light on immigrant health disparities by identifying critical structural factors needed for sustainable prevention.

Hospitality Workforce Training Program for Refugees and Immigrants
Funding agency: Mother Cabrini Health Foundation
Project duration: 2020-2023
Summary: This project is designed to train refugees and immigrants with hospitality workforce skills that will enable them to find hotel employment, secure a monetary income, and start a new life in the United States.

Our research proposals in progress (under review and/or under development) are as follows:

proposals

  • Novel Data and Analytical Resources to Understand Truck Driver Health, Safety, and Wellbeing
To be submitted to the National Institutes of Health
  • Excess Allostatic Load Burden of Hotel Workers: Epidemiology and Prevention
To be submitted to the National Institutes of Health
  • Understanding Foodservice Workers’ Health Disparities
To be submitted to the National Institutes of Health
  • Mental Health of Immigrant and Minority Seafarers
To be submitted to the National Institutes of Health
  • Working Life Exposome-Based Research to Understand the Effects of Precarious Employment
To be submitted to the National Institutes of Health

Our completed research projects cover diverse populations (e.g., racial minorities, immigrants, truck drivers, farm workers, hotel housekeepers, restaurant workers) and health and safety concerns (e.g., sexually transmitted infections, obesity, cardiometabolic disease, roadway crashes). This research has been funded by federal funding agencies, university funding streams, and other nonacademic sources.

Below we have included indicative published manuscripts of our ongoing work in diverse areas of population and occupational health and safety.

A space for sharing thoughts related to the advancement of population and occupational health and safety sciences

Fellow researchers,

This space will give me an opportunity to briefly share evolving thoughts, ideas, and questions related to the advancement of population and occupational health and safety sciences. Some of these thoughts might sound provocative or not well substantiated, at first, but it is my intention to initiate a discourse that contributes to moving population and occupational health and safety sciences away from their comfortable inertia.

In an era of fast-paced, revolutionary scientific innovations, Thomas S. Elliot’s words come to mind, when he said, “only those who will risk going too far (will) possibly find out how far one can go.” This may be somewhat of an unconventional road to take, but it does hold the potential to do more good than harm and, as scientists, we can only benefit from challenging ourselves. I anticipate lively exchanges that can offer significant food for thought.

Both researchers and practitioners are invited to participate in this forum. Interested parties can contact me at YApostolopoulos@prolepsis.org.
